We all say we don’t care about how many followers we have on social media. But secretly we all care, and for good reasons. Having a lot of followers gives you credibility and affects people’s decision to follow you.
So in this post, I list 7 things you can do other than creating content for long-term, sustained growth on every social media platforms.
1. Give your account meaning
Most people publish tons of flashy contents on social media. Flashy contents can be popular. But it’s not enough. You need to publish contents that have some sort of social impact.
One 2015 study from Nielsen shows that 81% millennials expect brands to be socially responsible. 73% would spend more on a product if it came from a sustainable brand. Since millennials tend to be the largest majority in socially, you need to cater to them.
It’s not just millennials who want brands to be socially responsible. Sprout Socials found that most social media users want brands to speak out on social and political issues.
Does this mean you have to tweet regularly to politicians? That’s up to you. But make sure your contents show that you care about your customers.
2. Follow popular accounts & people you know
On Twitter, many people follow other accounts just to get their followers back. Then they unfollow them. Try not to do this. Other people can see this is happening because they have a higher number of “following” and lower “followers”. Also, you want authentic, engaging followers, not just a higher number of followers.
Instead of following everyone, follow people you know. Most social media platforms will also recommend people you should follow. Follow those recommended accounts.
3. Share other brands content
Creating new original posts regularly takes a lot of times. Not all of us have the time to do that. So how you can share good content without spending a lot of time? By sharing other people’s content time to time.
I don’t mean you should steal content. Far from it. When you are sharing other people’s content, give complete credit to them. If it’s a photo you are sharing, include a name of the original owner at the bottom of the image.
If you share other people’s content, you’ll also build a relationship with the people whose content you are sharing.
4. Do cross-promotion on every platforms
If you want to increase your social media following, you need to make yourself visible. You need to get in front of as many people as usual. The easiest way to make your account more visible is to cross-promote your accounts across all of your social media accounts.
Include a link to your other social media accounts on every platform. Now and then ask people to follow your other accounts.
5. Participate in groups
Another way to get in front of new people is to join groups. Facebook and LinkedIn have groups you can join and discuss various things. Join a couple of relevant groups and become an active member. The more active and helpful you are in groups, the more new followers you’ll have.
6. Get speaking gigs
One of the best ways to get exposed to new people is to be visible and do amazing things outside of the internet. So try to get speaking gigs at conferences and meetups.
The people you’ll meet at conferences and meetups will be highly relevant to your business. So if you can be valuable to them with your speaking gig, many will check out your social media accounts and follow you.
To make sure people find you on social media, include your twitter handle at the bottom of the sliding deck you’ll present.
You should also try to appear on video shows and podcasts. As well as being good for your career, you’ll see an uptick in your followers count.
7. Join forum and Q&A sites
Another way you can engage with non-followers is by joining forums and Q&A sites. Join Quora, Reddit and one or two relevant forums you can find. Then look for questions related to your fields and answer them as best as you can.
You can casually take part in all kind of conversation. But answering questions is the easiest way to get in front of more people.
You can also host your own Q&A sessions on Twitter. Simply create a hashtag and respond to all the questions that contain the hashtag. Answer questions for a short period of time and don’t answer trolls.
