E-commerce sales are exploding. As an e-commerce marketer, you want your share of the cut. But what if you don’t have a budget for ads? Is it possible to increase traffic and boost sales? Absolutely.
In this post, I take a look at how you can increase e-commerce traffic without buying ads.
1. Work with Instagram influencers
Instagram is a fantastic social media platform for e-commerce merchants. One study published by L2 Think Tank found that Instagram gives brand 25% more engagement than other social media platforms. If you can utilize it properly, it’ll also give you a huge amount of awareness and traffic for your site.
For example, let’s say you sell your own brand of basketball socks. To get attention for your store, look for popular basketball related Instagram accounts. After you find some popular accounts, look for their contact address. Almost all popular accounts have a phone number, email or website address on their profile.
Now you have to contact them. You’ll have to ask them if they would be willing to feature your product on their post. Not everyone will. Here’s an email sample from Shopify you can use:
2. Reach out to bloggers & vloggers
You can also reach out to bloggers & vloggers with a large following. The process is the same as reaching out to Instagrammers.
To find popular bloggers search “best basketball accessories blogs” on Google. You can also try with “basketball training”, “basketball shooting tips,” etc. To find influential vloggers, search for your keyword in Youtube search bar. You may have to play around with your keywords a bit before you find suitable accounts.
Just modify the email you have sent to Instagrammers and send it to bloggers & vloggers.
Getting coverage from a popular personality will drive a lot of traffic and sales to your site. But it’s difficult to get coverage from them. So don’t target the biggest & very successful people. You’ll have more success with people with a smaller audience.
3. Start blogging
Content marketing is a fantastic way to drive visitors. It will also help you establish authority on topics related to your business. One easy way to drive a lot of visitors to your site is by reaching out to popular bloggers.
You don’t have to send them a sample of your product in this strategy. When you are writing a new post, feature popular bloggers in your industry in your post. After hitting “Publish”, reach out to them and say you’ve featured them in your post. Most will share the post with their social media followers.
You can also ask them for quotes and share it on your post. To get the most result out of your work, interview multiple people and publish it as a roundup. Then you’ll have a single post shared by multiple influencers in your industry.
4. Run a giveaway
With a well-executed giveaway, you can go from 100 visitors a month to 10,000 a month. To run a successful giveaway, you first need to set a clear goal. What are you trying to achieve? Do you want traffic to a specific page? Or maybe you want to grow your mailing list?
Now you want a relevant and exciting prize. Since you run an e-commerce site, you can give a limiter/special version of your product as the prize. You can also give a free product, voucher, free tickets, travel cost, etc. But make sure the prize is closely related to your business.
If your goal is to get more visitor, encourage participants to share a specific link on social media to increase their chance of winning.
To make your giveaway successful, you need to reach as many people as possible. To do that, you need to include a viral loop in your giveaway. Encourage participants to share on social media to increase their chance.
A single google search will provide you with multiple giveaway tools you can use to run your giveaway.
5. Launch a referral program
People almost always trust referrals from their friends. So launching a referral program is a fabulous way to get visitors and boost sales.
You don’t have to do anything complicated to get people to refer their friends. Just asking them to do it works. To make sure more people refer to their friends, give them a discount or gift card when they do it. Also, make sure the reward is super simple to understand.
Before you start a referral program, you need to make sure you have a great product and retained users. Otherwise, your referral program won’t work.
You can also make your reward two-sided for better results. For example, you could make it that if I refer my friend, I will get $20 and my friend will get 10% discount.
6. Help people on Twitter
If you don’t have any follower on Twitter, generate some follow-backs by following select people. You can use Followerwonk to find relevant users to follow. You can also follow the followers of your competitor.
Then engage pro-actively with people in your industry. If you run a local shop, tweet about the local community. If you are good at Twitter, soon you’ll have lots of people interested in your business.
To make engaging easier, search your business keywords on Twitter. Then look for chances to help people in a way that doesn’t involve selling your product. If they find your tweets helpful, they will discover your store.
7. Strategize SEO
93% of web traffic comes from a search engine. Less than 5% of web searchers make it to the second page of Google result. So everyone is aware they have to do SEO. But a lot of people don’t spend enough time doing it.
